FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
|
| Q: | What percentage of my gift will go to helping the women, children and families? |
| A: | 90%. Fully 115 of our 120 staff work directly with the women and children. Five staff members handle program management, finance, development, communications, personnel, IT and administration. As a result, we are able to keep our administration and fund-raising expenses to just 4 and 6% respectively. |
| Q: | Do you need donations of appliances, cars, cell phones, clothing, food, furniture, office equipment, toiletries, toys or any other items? |
| A: | No. We already have long-standing relationships with organizations that provide the material items we need. What the women and children need most is the skilled attention of trained social workers, therapists, job counselors and educators. With your financial donation, you can help provide that. |
| Q: | Are you affiliated with any other House of Ruth? |
| A: | No. We provide services only in the District of Columbia and are not affiliated with any other organization called House of Ruth. |
| Q: | My organization wants to raise money for House of Ruth. How do we proceed? |
| A: | Thank you for joining the many groups that organize benefits and fund-raising drives to help the women, children and families at House of Ruth! Please send an e-mail to cstevens@houseofruth.org describing your idea for raising money. We’ll review it (to make sure you aren’t inadvertently proposing something that doesn’t fit with our mission) and be glad to send you information about House of Ruth for your use. Our staff stays very focused on their work with the women, children and families (and our administrative staff is very small), so we usually can’t provide a person to participate in the many fund-raising activities held on our behalf. |
| Q: | What is House of Ruth's federal tax identification number? |
| A: | 52-1054102 |
| Q: | What is House of Ruth's number for the CFC (Combined Federal Campaign)? |
| A: | 83599 |
| Q: | How do I give through the United Way campaign at my job? |
| A: | You need to write us in on the lower right hand corner of the form. Please list our name, address (House of Ruth, 5 Thomas Circle, NW, Washington, DC 20005) and tax ID number (52-1054102). You have to pledge at least $100 – and fulfill that pledge – in order for House of Ruth to receive your gift. Smaller gifts will be retained by the United Way.
House of Ruth doesn’t appear in the United Way list of charities any more because we joined together with 21 other leading non-profits to create a new federation to promote workplace giving, called Community 1st , under the aegis of a group called America’s Charities. For more information, visit www.charitiesdc.org Our goal is to grow workplace giving in the region to the level we enjoyed prior to the 2002 scandal at the United Way. United Way workplace giving hasn't’t ever bounced back, so we wanted to try a new approach. |
