Adopt A Family Holiday Program

The Adopt A Family program matches you or your organization with a family at House of Ruth. You will be provided with a profile that lists the age, gender and sizes of each family member along with a short wish list of items and a Gift Hero wish list link. To participate in the Adopt A Family program, please contact us at 202-597-5803 or ekiker@houseofruth.org.

PLEASE read the guidelines below before you do so – donors can expect to spend $100-150 PER FAMILY MEMBER. Please provide your name, organization, mailing address, email address and phone numbers as well as the size of a family you wish to adopt (families range in size from 1+ people.)

Adopt A Family Guidelines
  1. Can I wrap the gifts?

No, all gifts must come to us unwrapped. This is to ensure that what we are providing our clients is non-violent and age-appropriate. It also gives a chance for the mom to wrap the presents for her children. Adopters are more than welcome to provide wrapping supplies!

  1. When do we need to provide the gifts by?

We ask that all gifts be brought to us by December 14th. Our clients are informed of these dates beforehand and many will come to us that same day to start picking up their items. If you forget to bring an item, and drop it off late, there is no guarantee that we will be able to reunite it with its family.

  1. Am I able to meet the family that I am adopting?

No, for confidentiality reasons we are unable to share anything about the family besides the profile.

  1. Can I add to the family’s wish list?

Yes, the list that you are provided is not all inclusive. However, our clients have given serious thought to their needs, so the things listed are their first choice – please prioritize these items.

  1. Do the items have to be new?

Yes, any items that are received in November/December must be new. This is both for Adopt A Family items and general donations from our Amazon Wish List. Please include gift receipts when possible.

  1. What about purchasing gift cards for the family?

Gift cards are acceptable and welcomed. Gift cards to places like Wal-Mart, Target, gas stations, and grocery stores usually work best, unless the family specifies something else. If possible, include the gift card receipt or a note as to the amount (in case the client tries to use it and it doesn’t work).

  1. How should I bring the gifts to House of Ruth?

Each gift (or bag/box of gifts) MUST be CLEARLY labeled with the family number and initials. Write on the OUTSIDE of the bag or box in permanent marker. Do not place notes inside – they can go missing.

  1. I have a question about one of the items on the wish list. Who do I contact?

Please send an email to Elizabeth Kiker at ekiker@houseofruth.org. We will go back to the staff working with the family to get the question resolved and will provide an answer as soon as it is available.

  1. How do I know if I am spending the right amount on the family?

You should expect to spend at least $100 to $150 on each individual. Please adopt accordingly – it is better to adopt less than more – you can spoil them! You can certainly spend more if you’d like.

  1. I adopted a family, but now realize I am unable to participate. What do I do?

Please inform the Coordinator as soon as you realize you are unable to adopt the family you received. This will help to ensure that other adopters have enough time to shop for the family.

  1. Where are you located?

Our administrative offices are located in Thomas Circle in Washington, D.C. If you need directions or help getting here, you can call 202-597-5803.
