House of Ruth Visits The View: Reuniting with Comedy Legends

Wednesday, October 23rd was a monumental day for House of Ruth as we visited The View to celebrate a legacy of hope, laughter, and philanthropy that stretches back nearly four decades.

The View featured our connection with comedy legends Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, and the late Robin Williams, who deeply believed in our mission to uplift women, children, and families in need. Seeing photos from the House of Ruth archives, Whoopi and Billy reminisced on their 1986 visit to our program. House of Ruth was the first nonprofit selected by the comedians to receive a donation from Comic Relief, a series that changed the landscape of charitable giving for houselessness.

A Legacy of Laughter and Giving Back

In 1986, Whoopi, Billy, and Robin teamed up to launch Comic Relief, a comedy special dedicated to raising awareness and funds to address houselessness across the U.S. Created by comedy producers Bob Zmuda and Chris Albrecht, Comic Relief aired on HBO and became an enduring success–blending humor with a heartfelt mission. The series brought together comedy’s biggest names for a purpose-driven show, with Whoopi, Billy, and Robin serving as beloved hosts.

From stand-up and sketches to musical performances, Comic Relief drew millions of viewers, with donations pouring in to make a difference. Over the years, Comic Relief raised over $50 million for organizations across the country. As part of their advocacy efforts, Whoopi, Billy, and Robin selected House of Ruth to be the first to receive a donation and a personal visit. Comic Relief generously donated $250,000 in 1986 to House of Ruth, supporting our mission to provide safe housing and comprehensive services to women, children, and families experiencing houselessness and domestic violence. The comedians chose to personally deliver the donations to the nonprofits—and a memorable and moving visit occurred at House of Ruth. Bringing a fleet of press in tow, Whoopi, Billy, and Robin spent time with the women and children we serve. Reflections on The View: A Walk Down Memory Lane

During the October 23rd  episode of The View, Whoopi and Billy reflected on their  visit to House of Ruth. Seeing archival photos brought back memories of meeting the women and children we serve and their enduring friendship with Robin, whose presence was felt in every moment of the conversation.
