October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on the often-hidden realities of abuse and the survivors who courageously rebuild their lives.
Our partner DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence (DCCADV) rallied together aligned organizations for its annual city-wide initiative, Paint the Town Purple. Purple is the color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The theme for DCCADV’s October campaign, Spread Love, highlighted the value of healthy relationships and shared a simple yet profound message: there is help, hope, and community here in DC.
For the initiative, advocates and community organizations took over metro stops across the region–to show their support for survivors and stand against domestic violence. This impactful tradition raised awareness, spread hope, and connected individuals in need with essential resources and support.

This year, House of Ruth proudly joined My Sister’s Place and Deaf DAWN at the NoMa and Columbia Heights metro stops. With outreach materials and colorful chalk, we left inspiring messages on the sidewalks—symbols of encouragement for survivors and reminders to everyone passing by that they were not alone.

While October is an important time to raise awareness, our commitment to survivors extends far beyond this month. At House of Ruth, we stand with survivors every day of the year. It’s through our ongoing work that survivors and their families gain access to safe housing, supportive services, emotional support, and the essential tools they need to rebuild their lives.
Each of our programs is designed to help survivors regain their independence and break free from the cycle of abuse. But we can’t do this critical work without your support. By becoming a monthly donor, you ensure that survivors receive the life-changing services they need—not just during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but every single day of the year.
