When Emma came to her first counseling session at House of Ruth’s Domestic Violence Support Center, she and her daughter had just fled an abusive relationship. Like all domestic violence survivors, Emma needed immediate safety, a place to begin the healing journey for herself and her family.
When Emma shared her struggles with housing insecurity, our counselors connected her with colleagues in House of Ruth’s family housing programs, allowing Emma and her daughter to move into stable housing through our connected services. There, Emmaaccessed the case management, wraparound supports, and continued counseling—services provided to all participants in our housing programs.
Over time, Emma secured stable employment and moved into her own apartment with her daughter. With encouragement and guidance, Emma connected with a psychiatrist, received a diagnosis, and began medication to support her mental health. Today, she continues working with her counselor to build coping skills, strengthen external supports, and maintain long-term stability.
Reflecting on her journey and decisions to prioritize mental health, Emma shared, “I need to take the steps to help myself because I want the best future for my daughter.”
Emma’s journey isn’t over, but she’s no longer walking it alone. You ensure that survivors like Emma have the safe space, support, and time they need to move forward.
