House of Ruth has served survivors in the DC community for nearly 50 years.

Empowering Women and Families Since 1976

House of Ruth is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Washington, D.C. We believe that everyone deserves to live a life free from violence and fear.

In 1976, we began as a housing-focused organization. Over the years, we came to understand the variety of needs accompanying houselessness and domestic violence. Today, we operate 14 programs across the District of Columbia, including housing, counseling, and child development services.

House of Ruth’s ultimate goal is to empower survivors of domestic violence to break the cycle of abuse and live independently, safely, and with dignity. Our organization aims to achieve this by providing comprehensive, trauma-informed services that address the unique needs of each survivor and their family. House of Ruth is committed to serving all survivors of domestic violence.

While we are supportive of nonprofits doing similar work, we have no affiliation with nonprofits with similar names, such as House of Ruth Maryland, Los Angeles House of Ruth, or House of Ruth in Claremont. House of Ruth is not affiliated with any religious ideals or practices.
